Sweet Sounds in a Noisy World

SWEET Sounds

Today is #LinkUp Day for #FridayFive at my friend Kelly’s blog Mrs. Disciple. Today’s prompt was audibles. I had some difficulty at first thinking of these as the last time Kelly did an ‘audible’ prompt she talked all about Podcasts. If you are interested in checking out some new podcasts, head over there to see what she recommends. I, however, have not ventured into the realm of podcasts, so I felt I was at a loss.

I started just thinking about the sounds that I love. Sweet sounds that I love hearing, sounds that bring me joy. Once I started down that path… they kept flowing.

Silence
Silence is Golden. Ok, so I know “silence” is not technically a sound, but when you are home all day with your kids, you need some silence. I very much appreciate silence, and it is one of my favorite sounds!! I am an introvert, and I also love being at home with my kids, so for me to be at my best, I need to refuel. Silence refuels me. I wake-up at 5:30 AM to have quiet time before my kids wake up. Beyond telling me my coffee is ready, Jeff does not talk to me. He knows. I need quiet. After a full morning of school and activities with my kids, I need to refuel. Silence. We have mandatory quiet time in our house, and everyone needs to do something quietly.

Laughter
I love hearing my kids laugh. I love laughing with Jeff. Laughing is good for the soul. I wrote about some of the things that make me laugh last week for the LOL prompt. Hearing my kids laugh brings pure joy to my soul.

Worship
Worship is one of the ways that I connect with the Lord. I love listening to worship music, and I love just getting lost in it. Right now songs that are on constant repeat for me are Good Good Father by Chris Tomlin, and I Believe by Hillsong Worship. I am doing the I Believe study of the Nicene Creed that the organization IF: Equip created, and I love listening to this song before I dig into the study.

Ocean
The Ocean is another way that I connect with Jesus. I love looking at its expanse and just imagining the Creation unfolding. The sounds of the Ocean are so peaceful to me. When my kids were babies, I always put sound machines in their room and would play the ocean waves sounds. Sitting on the beach, looking and listening to the Ocean is one of my favorite things. I plan on writing a separate post soon about this being one of my favorite places of all times.

Garage Door
Ok, I know this seems like it doesn’t fit, but hear me out. The Garage Door is one of the sweetest sounds of my day. It is my announcement of Jeff returning home from a long day. 99% of the time when he comes home, I am in the kitchen finishing up dinner, and when I hear the sound of the garage door, it’s like my body just sighs. I am so thankful for the long hard days that he puts in, and I am so thankful when he comes through the door at night. The kids will usually hear the garage door as well, and they run to greet him at the door.

What are some of your sweet sounds that you listen for in this noisy world?

So funny–we pretty much have three of the same sounds. (Your garage door equals my “Im home!”) They are indeed sweet.

Ocean. Silence. Birds singing. Thunder. Rain on metal (like the car roof). Wind in the trees on days when the weather is not too cold. A baby’s laugh.

I never considered silence as one of my favorite sounds, but after reading your love song to silence, I think I will make it my favorite as well. LOVE the song you shared! The basics of our faith is such a sweet sound!

Love the sound of Springtime toads. Spring is my favorite time. The fresh smell of morning rain, the cool sunny mornings. The toads are numerous due to our neighbors pond (I also love the sound of the waterfall in the pond). As well as a handful of bird songs (Wren a favorite), the sicatta bug on a hot summer day…Nature brings me closer to our amazing Creator. I am in awe!
