It’s the most wonderful time of the year… SUMMER!! Summer is my favorite season and my favorite time of year. We have a short summer season here in Michigan, so we need to make the most of Every. Single. Day. If you blink, summer may be over. Today at Mrs. Disciple for #FridayFive we are linking up some of our favorite Summer Memories.
For the last few years, we have done a Summer Bucket List. It has been a ton of fun making our lists and looking at it every day; planning on when we will do things, or get this… even spontaneously doing one of them at the last minute. Here is what our board looked like last Summer:
Some of our favorites from last summer’s SBL were:
The last few years we have had an annual camping trip with friends. It has become one of our favorite weekends of the summer. We spend our days at the lake and the land before the water, and our evenings are filled with fun times around the campfire. All 6 of us are packed like sardines in our 6 person tent. We are on the hunt for a bigger tent, but who knows if it will be this summer or not. In addition to our camping weekend with friends, we usually will set the tent up in our backyard for another fun time.
I am not ashamed to admit that ice cream is incorporated into a few different bucket list items. I asked the kids what their favorite things we did from last year were, and Alyssa said hers was riding our bikes to get ice cream. We had never ridden our bikes to the ice cream place before, and it was going to be the kids longest ride. We prepped the kids with a few other longer rides before we actually made the ride there. It was worth the work and the kids were proud that they accomplished the ride. Other bucket items that include ice cream are ice cream for dinner, where we go all out with huge sundaes and our progressive dinner last summer ended at Menchies, which the kids loved.
Flying kites is another simple yet fun-filled memory from last summer. While we were at our beach rental, my dad took the kids out to fly a kite after dinner one night. It took them a couple of tries, but they were able to get it up.
And we all know my favorite memory is going to be the beach since it is where I long to be.
ROLLING DOWN A HILL
Cole’s favorite bucket item was rolling down a hill. Seriously, how much simpler can it get? We went to a local park that has a huge hill (where we go sledding) and laid down and rolled down it. Easy right? For my kids yes. For Jeff and me, however, we usually need to sit for five minutes before we can stand up.
VISIT A NEW MUSEUM
Since we travel a lot in the summer months visiting family in New Jersey and Texas, we usually try to visit a new museum, zoo, or aquarium. Last summer we went to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. The best part of it is, is that our local museum that we are members of has a reciprocal program that makes it free for us to visit several other places. You can’t beat free.
So this wasn’t an actual Summer Bucket List item, but it is by far one of the most memorable moments from last summer for the girls and I. We went to a book signing for My Prairie Cookbook by Melissa Gilbert. My girls wore their prairie outfits and Mrs. Gilbert adored them. She told me I had my very own Mary and Laura. Mrs. Gilbert asked for permission to take my girl’s picture and to post on social media. I obliged. This was her Instagram.
So there you have it. There are some of the fun memories from last summer, and we are looking forward to many new ones this summer. I have created a pdf of all our Summer Bucket List Ideas, and I would love to send that to you. I will send it to anyone signed up for my weekly newsletter on June 1, 2016, so if you haven’t yet signed up – go do so now!
