One year ago today on March 10th, 2015 I received this email… what was to come of that, no one ever could have imagined.
This was the beginning of an amazing journey that has been a blessing to my life more than I can adequately put into words. What has formed from a group of 500 women from all over the world via a Facebook group – is priceless. I have grown and learned so much through these women, that I am forever grateful. We were assigned the task of launching Jen Hatmaker’s new book For the Love, but we accomplished much more than that.
Over the last year, we have done mug swaps (where we are given a “secret sister” and buy a mug and a few other goodies to send to each other), had our own For the Love mug made, designed and proudly worn our For the Love t-shirts and For the Love leather cuffs. We had ALL the things.
We have come together and pooled our finances to donate to organizations, to fund others’ adoptions, to buy one of the youngest a car, and to sponsor over 20 women’s trips to the Launch Party in Austin this past September.
We have had very candid and truthful conversations with each other. We have shared hard things. We have cried with each other over a multitude of things and have rejoiced with each other as well.
We have also had our silly moments. Like the time we went through a dub smash stage – oh my, the laughs!! We have also laughed uncontrollably over pictures and bios that men have sent to the single ladies through online dating sites. (So glad I am married!!)
In September 2015, we were all invited to Jen’s house for the Launch Party. Over 200 of us invaded the town of Buda, TX. We were able to meet each other face to face, hug each other, sit across the table from each other, and just bask in the community of FTL women. It still feels so surreal.
What started as a facebook group has grown to a Sisterhood. I am seriously getting teary-eyed thinking about the last year. To paraphrase Jen Hatmaker from the speech she gave us at the Launch Party, “#500 – You are the best gift that I didn’t even know to ask for.” So true.
Jen let us know after the party that we are not going anywhere. Her contract with the publisher was a 2 book contract. Since we did a pretty good job of getting For the Love on the NY Times Best Seller list, she is sticking with us and has already made mention of Farmhouse Party 2.0.
This community is so very special to me. If you asked me a year ago if I thought a real community like this could have formed from a Facebook group, I probably would have laughed. Today, though, today I am here to tell you that it can and it does.
