Kindergarten, Elementary, and Middle School, Oh My! {Our 2017-2018 Curriculum Choices}

posted in: Homeschooling | 2

Well, it’s that time of year again for us – a new school year. Although we have started our co-op, we haven’t officially started our year at home yet. Enjoying the last little bit of summer that Michigan has to offer us. However, we are armed with our curriculum and ready to start next week. So, let me share with you our 2017-2018 curriculum choices.

Kindergarten

Well, my baby is in Kindergarten. WHERE DOES THE TIME GO? As you may be aware, we have used My Father’s World for years. My three older have all been through My Father’s World Kindergarten. However, I just did not have it in me to do it again. I needed something different. I hope that doesn’t sound bad, but I honestly didn’t think I could teach that curriculum again. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that it is an excellent curriculum. It has been a foundation in teaching my kids to read, but I just needed a change. GASP! I haven’t fully decided what we are going to do, but I am leaning towards using Hooked on Phonics. Blake also takes two hours of Five in a Row at our co-op for his Kindergarten classes.

Kindergarten Curriculum we are using this year.

Elementary

Alyssa is entering 5th grade, and Cole is entering 2nd. They are my elementary students. Cole did great last year and is reading like a champ now. I love watching the reading process click with my kids. It is no easy task teaching a child to read, but the reward is incredible.

This year for Language Arts Cole will be using Learning Language Arts through Literature. This is my first time using this curriculum, but I am looking forward to using it.

Also, Cole will be doing Math U See Beta for his Math curriculum. The girls started out with Math U See as well, however, at about 3rd grade we transitioned to Teaching Textbooks.  The girls will both be doing Teaching Textbooks 6 this coming year.

Middle School

If I thought it was crazy that my baby was in Kindergarten  —  it is even crazier that my oldest is going into Middle School. WHAT IS HAPPENING???  Hayley is starting 6th grade, and I am beside myself. I am in serious denial over here. She is a smart girl, and I know she is going to rock Middle School.  As I already noted, she and Alyssa will both be doing Teaching Textbooks 6 for Math.

For Language Arts, they will both be doing Apologia’s Readers in Residence (read my review here) and Writers in Residence (review here). I am so excited about this curriculum, they are both fantastic, and the girls are already enjoying them.

Co-op Classes

I love our co-op and the quality of courses that my kids can get there.  As I mentioned, Blake takes a Five in a Row class along with gym, music, Lego club, and a virtues class.

Cole, Alyssa, and Hayley all take Story of the World 2 at our co-op for our history curriculum. Cole is in the 1st through 3rd-grade class for it, and the girls are in a  4th – 6th grade class for Story of the World. I assist in both the classes which I love. We have the audio cd and will all listen to the weeks required reading together, and then they will review the material and do any related activities or map work in class.

Our history curriculum choices. Audio cd's are the BEST!

The three oldest also take Apologia’s Zoology 3 at our co-op too. Same grade breakdown. Cole works through the Junior notebook, and the girls use the regular notebook.  We also got the cd for this so we can listen to it all together.  They will do lab work in class – which is really invaluable since I would never do it!!!

Our science curriculum for this year! Audio CD's are are a must!!

Lastly, both boys are taking the class I am teaching at co-op which is We Choose Virtues. I have used We Choose Virtues in our home, and I am thrilled that I have the opportunity to teach other kids at our co-op. It is a wonderful curriculum for teaching children about living a godly life and having virtues like obedience, kindness, and self-control to name a few.

We Choose Virtues Character Building Curriuclum is great for teaching at home or at a co-op!

As you can see, we have a balanced lineup for our curriculum choices for this year.  Additionally, the kids are taking Art, French, Shakespeare, and Choir at our co-op.  Also, we will all be doing Bible Study Fellowship this year, so we will be studying the book of Romans for our Bible curriculum.

I would love to hear what you are using this year! Please share in the comments!! Want to see what other bloggers are using this year for their homeschool curriculum? Check them out here!
